{"id":129,"date":"2007-05-13T14:45:00","date_gmt":"2007-05-13T14:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zofxare.com\/zofxare\/blog\/2007\/05\/13\/speed-up-windows-part-5\/"},"modified":"2007-05-13T14:45:00","modified_gmt":"2007-05-13T14:45:00","slug":"speed-up-windows-part-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zofxare.com\/zofxare\/blog\/2007\/05\/13\/speed-up-windows-part-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Speed up windows part 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Next step in speeding up your Windows PC involves tweaking the registry. <br \/>First, you should create a system restore point, just in case something goes wrong:<\/p>\n<p>Click Start and choose either Programs or All Programs. <br \/>Go to Accessories, then System Tools, and choose System Restore. <br \/>On the welcome screen, you\u2019ll be asked whether you want to restore or create a restore point. Choose Create a Restore Point. <br \/>Name it something you\u2019ll remember, such as \u201cBefore Changes.\u201d <br \/>Click Create. <br \/>Now if something doesn\u2019t work, you can repeat these steps and choose \u201cRestore\u201d instead, to return to the status you just saved. <\/p>\n<p>Ok. Let&#8217;s make some changes.<\/p>\n<p>1. Make menus load faster:<\/p>\n<p>Start regedit by clicking Start, Run and type regedit.<br \/>Navigate to the following key by clicking the plus signs next to the name of each level:<br \/>HKEY_CURRENT_USER \/ Control Panel <br \/>Click \u201cDesktop.\u201d A list of entries will appear on the right side. <br \/>Double-click \u201cMenuShowDelay\u201d and change the Value data to 0. <br \/>Click OK. <\/p>\n<p>2. Free memory from closed programs. Windows sometimes keeps dll&#8217;s in memory even after the application using the dll has been closed.<\/p>\n<p>Start regedit, following the instructions in this lesson. <br \/>Navigate to the following key:<br \/>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \/ SOFTWARE \/ Microsoft \/ Windows \/ CurrentVersion <br \/>Under CurrentVersion, right-click on Explorer, then choose New->Key. <br \/>In the box that appears (\u201dNew Key #1\u2033), change the name to AlwaysUnloadDLL. <br \/>Hit Enter. On the right side, double-click the word (Default). <br \/>For the value data, enter 1. <br \/>Click OK.<\/p>\n<p>3. Speed up the startup of programs.<\/p>\n<p>In regedit, navigate to the following key: <br \/>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \/ SYSTEM \/ CurrentControlSet \/ Control \/ Session Manager \/ Memory Management \/ PrefetchParameters<\/p>\n<p>When you click PrefetchParameters, the right side of the editor will display a list of entries. <br \/>Double-click \u201cEnable Prefetcher\u201d and change the value data to 5 (in decimal, not hexadecimal). <br \/>Click OK. <\/p>\n<p>4. Reduce time Windows spends updating \u201clast accessed\u201d time for a folder and it&#8217;s subfolders.<\/p>\n<p>In regedit, navigate to the following key:<br \/>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \/ System \/ CurrentControlSet \/ Control <br \/>Under Control, right-click on FileSystem, then choose New, then DWORD Value. <br \/>Replace \u201cNew Value #1\u2033 with NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate and hit Enter. <br \/>Double-click NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate and change the Value data to 1. <br \/>Click OK. <\/p>\n<p>Close regedit.<\/p>\n<p>5. Now let&#8217;s use msconfig and do a final tweak to improve swapfile performance by telling Windows not to use the swapfile until the absolute last minute.<\/p>\n<p>Click Start, then Run. <br \/>Enter msconfig in the box. <br \/>Click on the System.ini tab. <br \/>Click the plus sign next to 386enh. <br \/>Click New, then type \u201cConservativeSwapfileUsage=1\u2033 in the box that appears. <br \/>Click OK. <\/p>\n<p>All done.
